Editorial Review
Leave it to simplehuman to revolutionize the way we wash our hands. The sensor soap pump dispenses soap touch-free to help avoid cross-contamination. Simply place your hand under the sensor to dispense soap automatically. An optional LED light timer blinks for 20 seconds to indicate how long to lather for germ-free hands. Four volume settings allow the pump to dispense preset amounts of soap or lotion. Operates on 4 AA batteries (not included).

Great concept, motor died twice!

Got one two years ago from mother in law and worked great for 1.5 years and burned out. Emailed SH to replace at cost if needed, as I liked the concept in my kitchen while working w/ food. This is in March 09. I was thrilled until last week when it started to peter out again. Same symptoms, grinding motor, no soap coming out so the hubs changed the batteries and still was not working. Won't buy again and have gone back to conventional soap dispensers. I'm sad as I like SH products, but this one's a dud.

After becoming accustomed to touchless soap dispensers in public restrooms, I was happy to find this gadget at a local Bed Bath and Beyond. For the most part, the purchase was a good investment despite my having to return the original item. In fact, I even purchased one as a Christmas gift for a relative. For the price, the product is a relatively high quality item that has all the advantages of commercial touchless dispensers. Given concerns over bird flu, swine flu, salmonella poisoning, anthrax and Ebola, it is a product suited for the times. In total, The Simplehuman Sensor Soap Dispenser is a great complement to any kitchen or bathroom.

From an end-user perspective, its general performance is as good as commercial models. In fact, is has the advantage of a adjustable dispensing volume which is not made available to patrons of public restrooms. With a large reservoir and four AA batteries powering the unit, it requires little maintenance. However, with the first model I purchased, it lasted for 1.5 years. After returning it to Bed Bath and Beyond via their overly generous return policy, I received a replacement model. While it looks identical to the first two I purchased (the one given as a gift is still working), the pumping mechanism is much faster. This is a nice plus that I believe will help mitigate one general problem with the original dispenser in that the soap would, on rare occasions, dry and clog the nozzle. This has not happened with the new version yet.

The design of the dispenser is part of the appeal. It definitely adds a modern touch to any kitchen. Given the footprint of the base, however, it might be a bit large for some bathroom vanities in urban apartments where space is limited.

If you are looking for a gift this holiday season in an era of ongoing concerns over communicable diseases and food borne illnesses, this product could provide significant value at a low cost.

Pros

Adjustable soap volume

Large reservoir

Sleek design

Good battery life with four AA

Weight keeps it in one place

Cons

May be a bit large for some bathroom vanities

Some corrosion on metal plating (turned green)

Other tips:

The best batteries appear to be the Sanyo Eneloop low self-discharge batteries

Get gadget. Loved it for about 6 months and then it started leaking the dish soap all out the bottom. I took it apart and thought I could see that it was leaking around where the little pump suction hole is that connects to the inside of the soap container portion. I used some sealant that works great on plastics and fish tanks. Well after all that, it ends up its leaking from the underside of the pump wheel itself. Can't seal that! lol

I was certain that I bought this through Amazon and wanted to get a copy of my invoice send to manufacturer for replacement (2yr warr?) and now Amazon's website is not showing my orders and keeps saying "Try again later".

Anyway, great while it worked but for the money spent, should have lasted longer. Something tells me I'm not the only one with the problem and read on another site that there might be a "new and improved on coming". Doesn't do me any good for now but good to hear.

I bought two automatic soap dispenser. This one and the J.E. Allton SD1020 Touch-Free 9.5-Ounce Automatic Liquid-Soap Dispenser. I like the Simplehuman much better. Unlike the other one, it has a knob for adjusting the amount of soap and also a continuous button. It is pretty compact, since one of my concerns was that it wouldn't fit on my pedestal sink, but it did. My 3 yr old and me are finally enjoying washing her hands finally. I would recommend this product.

My whole family was impressed by this dispenser--for about 2 months. Then it started to become erratic. Replacing the batteries helped for a little while, but within 3 months it had developed a mind of its own. It never poured soap when prompted, but instead pumped a drop every 15 minutes or so. At this point, changing the batteries does not change the machine's behavior. It turns out that was a lot of money to spend when divided by the amount of times it was used. Disappointing. Back to the old pump dispenser.
